How I’ve searched so long? Maybe NOT for a little black Lego block. No, I’ve been looking far and wide to be the most amazing Lego set. A Lego set that will show all the Lego followers that I’m a master-builder.
Yes, I can remember a specific case, where Satan came to steal my freedom and peace at such a young age – how ugly is the deceiver to steal from children. Christmas was upon us and a young lad like me just found the magical alure to “create” one’s own toys. My mates at school were preselected based on the number of Lego sets they owned and allowed me to play with. Our family were not blessed with many Legos sets, everybody knows, these little plastic pieces cost almost a hundred pounds… per instruction page.
That year Star Wars spaceships started trending in South Africa. I remember we went to watch the 3rd (or as the geeks will know “Episode IV”) movie in the school hall for one rand. We did not even know there were two prior movies, I only later discovered the reason for my confusion as a primary schooler.
There we were making lightsabers from carton rolls, talking into box masks with Dart Vader voices, when the ultimate expression of make-believe play arrived from Denmark – Star Wars Lego sets. One could now build the actual spaceships that swished around in space, shooting laser beams, the excitement went interstellar.
My heart yearned like a hungry hound for one of these plastic constructions and I wanted a specific one. I begged my parents without seizing. My poor mother made a plan and I had to settle for a type of spaceship related Lego set – it was not Star Wars, but it had a space man included and wings and walker skids. It cost way more than my mother could afford. This Lego set is long gone, but the lie was bought and stayed for some time.
Dealing with my emotional pain now, I can remember this devouring longing to have something that will give my identity the validation I wanted. A feeling to belong. I still recognise this feeling at regular interval nowadays when I fall in front of the devil, thinking that things will provide me security.
Things does not bring the security or contentment as our Father intended.
Now that I’m older and decided to find my security and contentment in the One that provides in our specific needs, when we follow Him. My space opera of a saga has never been easy, justly due to my own flawed search for contentment in things and earthly recognition.
God has put me into place, like a little black lego block, on this planet in a galaxy far-far away.
It was an October day. We were longing for the first summer rain pattern to establish. The day was past first breakfast and I had an important task to complete. Play the “The Imperial March” for effect. I had to do the clearing of the dog mishaps from the garden – important Imperial business.
Armed with a “lightscooper” and a plastic bag, I tackled the task with the main aim – to get it done quickly. While scooping away, I found that our majestic staffies has the inclination to go potty in the most inexplicable places. On big rocks. Why?
As I’m busy in another remote corner of the garden I spot a little black Lego block half hidden between the rocks and a cluster of old and new refined dog food. The block was dirty and covered in ugly. At first, I got a bit angry with finding expensive toys in the garden. But then I thought, it is only one little Lego piece, the kids have so many, and I honestly don’t want to touch it. So, I continued to scoop on. But something called me back to that missing block and I felt that this block has the potential to complete a police car that will keep order in Legoland.
Scrubbing it with my shoes first, making sure it is rid of most of the stink, I picked it up and put it in my pocket. After finishing the important business, I went back to wash hands and this little black block. This little block required a lot of hard scrubbing to get clean. I had to add some light green Andy soap to get into all the nooks. After drying it, I had a look again and saw it had some scars from wandering outside of Legoland, BUT it was still intact and able to do a proper job completing a functional Lego creation.
After putting the little black block in the crate with its mates, I realised that God has given me a purpose and after gathering me from the filth of my selfish decisions and washed me clean, put me exactly where I can serve in His Kingdom. Part of a magnificent building, exactly as the only Master-builder requires.
